Théodore de Banville (1823-1891) was a French poet and playwright. He wrote several plays in verse. He was also a dramatic critic. He was decorated with the Legion of Honour in 1858. Read more about him at (

This monument in his honor, located in the Jardin du Luxembourg, features a bust of him at its top. It depicts him barechested but for a piece of a robe flowing over his right shoulder. The pedestal is more ornamented with several flourishes and also a bronze sculpture of a lyre and flowers. The pedestal is also set on a platform which is two steps up from the walkway.
