This sculpture depicts a nude woman gracefully holding her arms above her head...and holding a small apple in her right hand. The work is entitled "La Femme Aux Pommes" or The Woman with Apples. The artist is Jean Terzieff. A placard at the site reads:
"La Femme Aux Pommes
Jean Terzieff cree cette sculpture pour l'Exposition internationale de 1937 sur laquelle plane deja la spectre de la guerre mondiale.
Avec une grace sensuelle, elle tente d'ecarter les pommes de discorde entre les peuples."
which my best efforts at translation means:
"The Woman with Apples
Jean Terzieff created this sculpture for the 1937 International Exposition which took place under the specter of a world war.
With her sensual grace, she offers to allay discord between the people."
That exposition was officially known as the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne (International Exposition dedicated to Art and Technology in Modern Life) and was held from May 25 to November 25, 1937 in Paris, France. Read more about the Expo at (
