The monument for the casualties of both WWI and WWII is placed just in front of the old town hall. The creator of this monument was the sculptor Theo Blickx, which was director of the academic of arts in Malines.
The monument represents a mother with fold hands and her head looking down, covered in a cape. It was given the name 'mourning mother' but has been called locally 'Louwke Poep'. The weeping willow behind the monument completes the dramatic image.
