Silvio O. Conte was a Republican Member of Congress from western Massachusetts for 31 years. He was an ardent conservationist and received the support of both Republicans and Democrats. He was often re-elected to congress, unopposed.

NOV. 9, 1921 - FEB. 8, 1991
Representing the Massachusetts 1st Congressional District in the
United States Congress from 1959 to 1991.
The plaque is erected in grateful recognition by the citizens
of this region. Silvio Conte worked tirelessly for over thirty
years on our behalf. He was instrumental in obtaining federal
funds to aid in the reconstruction of the French King Bridge.
The Silvio Conte Anadromous Fish research center five miles
downstream exemplifies his hard work, his love of the great
outdoors and his respect for our environment.
