Ludovic Trarieux (1840-1904) was a French politician and lawyer...who originally was conservative...and then made his mark during the Dreyfus Affair while serving as Minister of Justice. After discovering problems with the evidence against Dreyfus, he became his defender...the only Senator to do so!
He then formed the League of Human Rights in 1898.
Since 1984, each year the Ludovic-Trarieux International Human Rights Prize is awarded to a lwayer who best demonstrates commitment to human rights. Read more about Trarieux at (

This monument to Trarieux is located in Place Denfert-Rochereau and the artists is Jean Boucher. It depicts several people...one would appear to be a classical figure...perhaps representing Justice ..and looking somber. On the opposite side of a column from "Justice" stands a man in what would appear to be common laborer clothes. He leans on the column with one arm and also seems to express a sadness.
At the base of the monument a woman and young girl seem to come to mourn. The colum reads "Ludovic Trarieux 1840-1904".
The artist, Jean Boucher (1870-1939) was a French sculptor best known for his many public monuments like this one. A liberal himself, Boucher's works advanced his own politics as well. One of his works was so controversial that it was bombed... a statue commemorating the union of Brittany with France. Read more about him at (
