This 1688 bronze sculpture entitled La Garonne depicts a bearded naked man laying down on his left side with his right leg bent at the knee. A cloth casually drapes his privates. He wears a laurel and a cherub is set between his legs. He holds an itme which may be a musical instrument which seems to be sinking into the sea. Water flows out of a basin below his right arm. The title indicates that this figure represents the Garonne...a river that flows through southeast France. There are similar works nearby representing other important rivers in France.
The artists are Balthasar Keller (1638-1702) and Antoine Coysevox (1610-1720).
