The palace of Versailles and its adjacent Gardens were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Originally, Louis XIII had a hunting lodge here. Moving the center of government here, Louis XiV hoped to gain more power over the nobility. There were at least four building campaigns here from 1664 to 1697. The Chateau is elaborate and over-the-top opulent intended to impress all visitors with the power of the French monarchy.
Wikipedia's article (visit link) is extensive about all aspects of the Palace and Gardens.
