Captain Richard Beers commanded a company of soldiers that came north from Hadley to evacuate the settlement at Northfield, which had been attacked two days earlier. Beers' company was ambushed by Indians on 4 September 1675. Beers and more than half his men were killed.
This marker is on Millers Falls Road (Route 63) in Northfield. It is inscribed:
