In 1626, King Louis XIII essentially shared power with his Chief Minister Cardinal Richelieu. The Musketeers who were loyal only to the King were constantly brawling with The King's Guard who were under Richelieu's command. In Chapter 6 of Alexandre Dumas' classic Three Musketeers, the Captain of the Musketeers goes to the Louvre, which then served as the Royal Palace to explain away a recent confrontation. The Captain meets with the King as the King is gambling...and although the King officially indicates that he must protest the Musketeers' conduct against the Guard, he also is delighted that the Musketeers beat Richelieu's men so conclusively..and makes an appointment to meet with and congratulate the Musketeers as well as D'Artagnon...the young man who recently came to Paris and sealed the win against the Guard.
