"The Korean War
June 25, 1950 - July 27, 1953
Deaths 54,246 - wounded 103,284
On June 25, 1950, North Korean invaded South Korea, and Seoul, South Korea fell to invasion forces. President Truman ordered U.S. Naval and Air Force to give immediate assistance to South Korea. On June 30, 1950, the U.N. approved ground troops in Korea. President Truman committed U.S. Troops to enforce the U.N. demand. General Douglas Macarthur was named commander. Fifteen U.N. member nations sent troops, and U.N. forces recaptured Seoul by September 30, 1950. U.N. Forces continued to push into North korea until the interention of Chinese Communist troops in November 1950. U.S. Naval Forces evacuated U.N. forces on December 11, 1950. The U.N. passed a cease-fire resolution on December 14, 1950, and a resolution to end the Korean War on February 1, 1951. Brutal fighting continued. On June 13, 1951, Gen. James Van Fleet, Gen Macarthur's replacement, was ordered to form a mainline of resistance and await negotiations. Truce talks began July 10, 1951. Communists broke off talks on August 23, 1951. Peace talks resumed October 25, 1951. During the interim period the Battles of Bloody Ridge and Heartbreak Ridge occurred. Truce talks shifted to Panmunjom November 27, 1951, when cease-fire was established. Talks continued off an don throughout 1953, and bloody fighting persisted. The U.S. sustained 46% of its casualties between mid-1951 and July 1953. A cease-fire was signed on July 27, 1953."

The Dianne Hamilton Military Museum is located adjacent to the Veterans Memorial in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. The Veterans Memorial features monuments, plaques, a replica of the statue of liberty, a history walk designed in the shape of a Congressional Medal of Honor medallion, and a 1/2 size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
The museum continues the experience by providing educational exhibits and collections that include war memorabilia, a display honoring the Buffalo Soldiers, a collection of military buttons, and artifacts of local residents that are military related. The museum exterior wall that faces the main street is adorned with an impressive mural of soldiers in lush vegetation and a Huey helicopter.
