O Castelo de Montemor-o-Novo é o recinto original da Vila medieval de Montemor-o-Novo. Conquistado aos Mouros por D. Afonso Henriques. D. Sancho I concedeu-lhe o 1.º Foral em 1203. A muralha terá sido reconstruída no reinado de D. Dinis. Nos séculos XIII e XIV administrava as freguesias urbanas todas com sede no interior do castelo: Sta. Maria do Bispo, Sta Maria da Vila, S. João e S. Tiago.
Progressivamente abandonado pela população a partir do Séc. XV; o Castelo conserva hoje importantes testemunhos da história medieval e moderna de Montemor-o-Novo: troços da muralha, Paço dos Alcaides, Igreja de Santiago, Igreja de S. João, Igreja de S. Maria do Bispo, Torre do Relógio, Porta da Vila, Torre e porta do Anjo, Torre da Má Hora, Convento da Saudação, entre outros.

Chronology:
Montemor-o-Novo castle is the core of the original medieval town of Montemor-o-Novo. Conquered from the Moors by D. Afonso Henriques. D. Sancho gave him the right to rule the town in 1203. The wall has been rebuilt in the reign of D. Dinis. In the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, he ruled over most of the nearby parishes from within the castle.
Starting on the fifteenth century, the population started to leave it to live outside the walls. The castle keeps, however, major testimony of the medieval and modern history of Montemor-o-Novo: sections of the wall, the main plaza, some churches and the clock tower, among others.
