In front of the Town Hall in Old Croydon, close to the boroughs major parks is a marvellous statue of Queen Victoria.
Victoria (Alexandrina Victoria; 24 May 1819 – 22 January 1901) was the monarch of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20 June 1837 until her death. From 1 May 1876, she used the additional title of Empress of India. (Thanks to Wikipedia).
The bronze statue shows the Queen sitting on a “throne” holding something in her right hand.
The bronze statue is approximately 1.6m tall and stands on a 2m square stone plinth.
Dare I say “She is not amused”.
The plinth has a bronze plaque which reads:
Victoria regina et imperatrix 1837 - 1901
The sculptor of this statue was F. J. Williamson, Sc. Esher, and was erected in 1903.
It stands outside the Croydon Town Hall which has plenty of history and architectural interest.
Also nearby is a war memorial and a park which was once the cutting for the Croydon Central Station.
This park also has a plaque remembering the station and a pretty fountain (when it works)!
