Deux Personnages Fantastiques (Two fantastic characters) is a monumental sculpture by Joan Miró located in La Defence, Paris, France.
The work is located on the esplanade of La Defense, across from "Les Quatre Temps" shopping center.
It represents two characters of a dozen feet high . These two fantastic giants, measuring 11 and 12 meters, seem to be playing together. They are made of polyester resin and painted blue, red and yellow colours, probably inspired from Miró´s native Catalonia.
With this monumental sculpture assembly, Joan Miró continued the birth of a personal universe, "a truly fantastic world of monsters living" in his own words. "By mythology i mean, (he said), something that has a sacred character as an ancient civilization". Half protecting women, half archaic animal , these original figures to the unstable equilibrium, as if conjured from the depths of the unconscious and suspended in space, belong to the bestiary slowly ripened by the Catalan artist.
The work was inaugurated in 1976
Joan Miró (Joan Miró i Ferrà) 20 April 1893, Barcelona —25 Décember 1983, Palma de Maiorca — Spain) was a painter, sculptor, engraver and ceramist.
He is one of the leading representatives of the surrealist movement.
