The Waterbury Train Station was originally built for the Central Vermont Railroad in 1875, utilizing the Italianate Victorian style of architecture. Up to 1957 it was a busy destination for tourists, skiers and commuting locals, where upon that time the railroads began experiencing decline in service due to the automobile, and more so to the Interstate Highway System. The station fell into a state of disrepair over the ensuing years until being rescued by the town in the 1990s. Through legal arrangements, financial grants and dedication and support from the local citizenry and business, the town of Waterbury was able to begin restoration of the station in 1997. The station was completely restored to it's original beauty in 2006. Green Mountain Coffee, headquartered in Waterbury and a large contributor to the station's restoration, now operates a visitor center and coffee shop in the north end of the station, and AMTRAK runs it's business in the south end, retaining the building's primary function. Once again, it became a destination spot in it's own right, situated in the center of town.

Sadly, the town of Waterbury, along with the rest of Vermont and surrounding area, became a casualty of massive flooding on August 28, 2011, following the landfall of hurricane Irene at the northeast coast. Downtown Waterbury became part of the Winooski River as it rose over its banks rapidly, filling buildings with water and mud. The Waterbury Train Station sustained much water damage, but fortunately, was not destroyed, and has been closed for business up to this time while repairs are being made. Even while closed, this beautiful building still draws much attention from visitors.
