Robert Wyland, who signs his work simply as Wyland, is an artist best known for painting large, outdoor murals of whales and other ocean life. His mission was to create these murals in 100 cities around the world. His first mural was completed on July 9, 1981 at Laguna Beach, California. In 1993, he went on his "East Coast Mural Tour" and painted 17 murals, in 17 cities, in 17 weeks from Portland, Maine to Key West, Florida. He fulfilled his dream with his 100th mural in Beijing, China on June 14, 2008.
The mural at the Maine State Pier in Portland was number 36; it was completed on June 7, 1993. It is entitled "Whales off the Coast of Maine". This mural is 450-foot long and features whales that are found along the Maine coast. The mural includes a series of whales, porpoises and even a sea turtle.
