This story tells of the relationship between an evacuee from London, William, and a surly widower, Mr Tom. Mr Tom reluctantly takes William in and slowly realises how many problems William has. William had been abused by his mother in London and been made to believe he will go to hell. Although slow in writing, William has an artistic gift which Mr Tom fosters. All goes well until William's mother invites William back home to visit. Mr Tom becomes worried after he has not heard from William and follows him to London where he finds William locked in a cupboard cuddling his dead baby sister. William is admitted to hospital, but Mr Tom smuggles him out and takes him home. Mr Tom gets into bother with social services but manages to persuade them that William's best interests lie in him living with Mr Tom.
The village where Mr Tom lives is Turville in Buckinghamshire. His home and his local church are set there.
