The detective Philip Marlowe is asked by General Sternwood, a near death man, to investigate the blackmail attempt on one of his daughters. Marlowe suspects that the real meaning to the General’s investigation is to find out what happened to his other daughter’s husband, Rusty Reagan.

Through several murders and drug dealing episodes, Marlowe persists in his investigations. Eventually he discovers that the youngest of the General’s daughters is mentally disturbed and that she killed Rusty Reagan at a ruined building on the estate.

At one stage in his investigations, Marlowe makes a connection to a missing Cabaret singer. He knows that she was seen recently near a garage. Ironically Marlowe has a puncture near the same garage and goes to investigate. His investigations lead to him being kidnapped. The garage in question was Idlecombe Farm, Turville in reality. There are two scenes, one in daylight when the missing singer is seen in her car near the garage, the second scene is at night when Marlowe investigates. The garage was created out of buildings at Idlecombe Farm.
