This film revolves around artist’s daughter Penelope Keeling who has a mild heart attack and decides to put her affairs in order. Penelope has had a full life, having been brought up in Bohemian London and Cornwall. She was unhappily married during the war, but met happiness in a serving officer, who tragically died during the war.

Penelope has three children, two of whom are greedy and scheming. The object of their greed is a painting called the Shell Seekers, painted by Penelope’s father when they lived in Cornwall. Living with Penelope is Antonia. Antonia is the daughter of the late Cosmo, the lover of Penelope’s daughter Olivia. Antonia and Penelope grow close. When Antonia falls for a local gardener Penelope decides to will some of her father's sketches to the couple, to the consternation of her children. At the same time the Shell Seekers is donated to an art gallery in Cornwall.

Turville is used as the village that Penelope returns to from hospital.
