Mr Waverly engages Poirot to try and prevent a kidnap attempt on his son, Johnny. A note has been received threatening the kidnap at precisely mid day a few days hence. Poirot becomes suspicious when it becomes apparent that Mr Waverly is near to insolvency. Inspector Japp is called and arranges for a guard at the house. Meanwhile Poirot and Hastings leave the Waverly house to follow their investigations else where. Hastings assures Poirot that he can get them back to the Waverly house by noon, and suggests they have an English Breakfast at a local pub. Hasting’s car fails to start and Poirot is too late to prevent the kidnap. Poirot works out, however, that the kidnap is an inside job and retrieves the child from its nanny, who lives nearby.
Whilst the breakfast at the pub is a small scene, it is vital in keeping Poirot away from the kidnap. The pub in question is the Bull & Butcher at Turville.
