This episode features a murder and a suspicious death. The murder concerns a local barmaid who was dating a locally arrived GI and was pregnant. The suspicious death concerns a friend of Sergeant Milner who dies in a house fire after drinking at a local pub. Milner wonders, given that his friend wasn’t drunk, why he didn’t escape the fire. The death and the murder are linked by the same pub, run by a man named Carter. The case is eventually solved by Foyle, who works out that the barmaid wasn’t murdered because she was pregnant. It turns out that Carter is running an illegal still at the back of the pub. The barmaid was selling the licquor at the pub and blackmailing the landlord, who eventually killed her. Milner’s friend couldn’t escape the fire because of the illegal alcohol he had drunk at the pub.
Carter’s pub is in fact the Bull & Butcher pub in Turville.
