This film is based around a number of players, each of which has a secret from some of the others. The central family are the Mannings, James is a wealthy London solicitor and is married to a much younger Anne. Outwardly they seem to have an idyllic life style, with a house in London and a hideaway in Buckinghamshire.

Things change when a neighbour re-appears on the scene. He is William Bule, a divorced man with an attitude problem. William catches the eye of Anne Manning at a local cricket match, which prompts her to suggest to James that they have the neighbours over for drinks. On the appointed night, James is working late in the city. Further, a man is knocked off his bike and killed by a hit and run driver. The dead man is the husband of Maggie, the Mannings’ housekeeper.

Anne takes an interest in the widow's wellbeing, whilst James suspects William may have been responsible, and confronts William with his suspicions. William agrees to go to the police station to satisfy James. When James tells Anne of what he has persuaded William to do, Anne confesses that it was William’s car, but that she was driving it whilst drunk. She further confesses to having had an affair with William.

Whilst the police investigate the murder, James and Anne decide to go away to Wales to try and reconcile their differences. Things get further complicated when it is revealed that Maggie can identify the car that killed her husband as that of William Bule. In a final twist there is doubt about Maggie’s evidence, given that Maggie was dismissed from the Bule household for suspected theft.

The funeral of the cyclist takes place at the parish church, St Mary's, in Turville.
