William Simpson ran a cafe at the Mersey ferry stage in Liverpool. He was well known as a person who would help anyone and in his time raised thousands of pounds for charity.

When he died a drinking fountain was erected in his memory in the gothic style. On top of the fountain are 4 lions supporting shields. Originally it was intended that the shields should have carvings on them, but this was never carried out.

The fountain is a grade II listed building and built into the outside wall of St. Nicholas Church.
