One of the iconic roads of the early 20th Century in mid-America is historic Route 66. Running from Chicago to California, it came right through Edmond, Oklahoma. It entered from the east on what is now Edmond Road, then turned south on Highway 77 (Broadway). The Royce Cafe, opened in 1933, was one of the many eating establishments which sprung up along Route 66, to provide for the needs of its many travelers.
The historic photo shown is of a popular post card published in the 1940s which shows the Native rock building with its red roof, and all its employees standing in front. It was open 24 hours a day and was famous for its T-Bone Steaks, Fried Chicken, Hot Biscuits and Home Baked Pies. The building was air-cooled, and served as a meeting place for the Kiwanis and Rotary clubs. They advertised that "All food was supervised by women." The restaurant was owned by Royce and Neva Adamson.
The building still stands today, although the rock has been painted off-white, and the roof is no longer red. It is occupied by various offices.
