The Taylor Street Firehouse has long been converted into a rescue shelter for the homeless. It is currently occupied by the Springfield Rescue Mission.
The Springfield Rescue Mission began serving the Springfield community since 1892 when it was established by Julius Cummings, a former Captain in the Salvation Army. It nearly ceased to exist in the 1930's when most operations were assumed by the Cummings Memorial, Inc. In 1938, Cummings Memorial Inc. occupied the Taylor Street Firehouse and the building became known as the Cummings Memorial Building. A name still in use today.
In 1997, the resurgent Springfield Rescue Mission bought the, then closed, Cummings Memorial property and has been operating from this location at, 148 Taylor Street, ever since.
