In the 1830's Grand Gulf was a major port on the Mississippi River, then came several epidemics, followed by the Mississippi scouring away huge sections of the town during several large floods. Then came April 30, 1863 when the Battle of Grand Gulf was fought between Confederate Artillery and Union gunboats decimating what was left of the town. Later the Mississippi finished off what was left when it changed it course, moving away from what was once a riverfront town. The park honors the memory of, and seeks to preserve what remains of the town, the battle and the times.
