Elkhart was once a major railroad and industrial town, but those days are long gone. Still, a number of the buildings that lined the main commercial street and extended towards several side streets in the downtown area remain. This historic district, which is principally commercial buildings of the Italianate, Queen Anne and Neoclassical architectural styles along eight blocks of Main Street. Development of this area began in 1870 and lasted until 1930.

Local architects A.H. Ellwood and E. Hill Turnock are represented in a number of the buildings, several of which have individual listings in the National Register. Unfortunately severe economic conditions at times in the city's recent history have resulted in the loss of a number of structures in the area. In some cases modern structures have been erected and others, the location has become a parking area.

The outline of the district is roughly along Main St., bounded by E. Jackson, and Second Streets, Waterfall Dr., and Tyler Ave. District co-ordinates taken at the corner of Main and Lexington. Street view is looking northeast from that point with the Water Department building in the foreground. Contributing building image is of the 213-15 Main Street building.
