Ruby was a significant mining town that went from boom to bust in only 10 years. The discovery of silver and gold here in 1886 led to the formation of one of the most famous mining towns in the Northwest at the time.
Ultimately, poor quality ore led to its downfall, then floods and fires finished it off. There is virtually no tangible evidence left of the town anymore as it burned to the ground and most of the remains have been carted off by souvenir hunters.
The marker today is significantly damaged by vandalism. The Washington State Medallion has been pried off and many of the letters are chipped away.
