One of two measurement stations along the River Wye above Matlock in the Derbyshire Peak District, the other one is in Buxton.
At 140m above Ordnance Datum it was opened in July 1965 to monitor the level in the river and if necessary give warning of floods to the towns and villages downstream.
The gauge is on the south bank of the river between a bridge at the end of a short lane off the A6 and its associated weir.
There are two gauge sticks, one actually in the river and the other attached to the fence a short distance up the bank. The automatic measurement is taken in a small building on the south bank and the data is automatically sent to a central collection point for analysis.
