Backbone Mountain is a ridge of the Allegheny Mountains and is located in both West Virginia and Maryland. It forms a portion of the Eastern Continental Divide and, at with its highest point in Maryland reaching 3,360', its the highest point in the state.
This spot is 265' below the summit but a nearby monument proclaims that this point on State Route 50 is the highest point on the Maryland State roads systems.
