Though damaged, this clock tower on the Monson Public Library survived a tornado - unlike another clock tower on a steeple nearby.

In Monson, along Main Street, is a stone building with a clock tower on it. This building is the Monson Public Library, and the clock tower is on the older portion of the building, which has a dated building stone that reads:
"In Memory
18 Horatio Lyon 81
Library Building"

At the time of the visit in mid July 2011, the clock tower and the building were damaged. The glass on the north face was missing. The faces visible were not keeping time. And the cupola, as well as other parts of the building, were covered in blue tarp. In June 2011 a tornado rated EF-3 roared through town. Though damaged, hopefully the clock will be repaired and running again. This is not the case for another Howard clock up the street that was in the steeple of the First Church in Monson. Portions of the steeple were still on the grass in front of the church.
