Estádio da Luz is a multi-purpose stadium located in Lisbon, Portugal. It has been used mostly for football matches and hosts the home matches of S.L. Benfica. The stadium was able to hold, circa 1991, a maximum of 120,000 people (being one of the largest in the world) and opened originally on 1 December 1954.
In 1999, Portugal was selected as the host of the UEFA Euro 2004 Championship. After many false starts, Benfica presented a proposal for re-building their stadium in order to enable it to become the main venue for that championship. A new stadium capable of holding a maximum of 65400 people was planned. Demolition started in 2002 so the current Estádio da Luz could be built.
