Der Park umgibt west- und südseitig das Schloss Mirabell in der Salzburger Neustadt.
Er ist von Norden (Rosenhügel, Kurgarten), Osten Schloss Mirabell, Mirabellplatz und Süden Makartplatz zugänglich und gewährt seinerseits Zugang zum Zwergelgarten.
Die barocke Gartenanlage wird nordseitig vom Schloss Mirabell eingeengt und grenzt südseitig an einen Baumbestand von geometrischem Grundriss. Sie gliedert sich somit in einen langgestreckten südlichen Teil (Großes Gartenparterre) und einen kleineren westlichen Teil (Kleines Gartenparterre), deren Mittelpunkt jeweils ein Brunnen bildet.
Schon 1631 ließ Erzbischof Paris Graf Lodron einen Eingang zum Garten hin zum heutigen Makartplatz errichten.
Nachdem im Jahr 1689 Johann Ernst Graf von Thun und Hohenstein zum Fürsterzbischof gewählt worden war, ließ er den Garten grundlegend umgestalten. Die Anlage wurde dem damals vorherrschenden französischen Geschmack angepasst. Die Gartenanlage wurde von Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach angelegt, der auch die Marmorbalustrade mit ihren Vasen entwarf. Der Garten wurde mit prachtvollen Marmorstatuen geschmückt; beteiligte Künstler waren Johann Fröhlich, Ottavio Mosto, Bartholomäus von Opstal, Andreas und Gregor Götzinger sowie Hanns Schwäbl.
Um 1730 wurde die Anlage von Anton Danreiter verändert. Erst 1854 wurde der Mirabellgarten von Kaiser Franz Joseph I. öffentlich zugänglich gemacht. 1955 wurde der Mirabellgarten historisiert[1].
2008 wurde der zentrale Springbrunnen für 15.000 Euro saniert.

The park surrounds the western and south-facing Mirabell in Salzburg's New Town.
