It was listed as Harmony Mills Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, and it was further declared a National Historic Landmark in 1999. The centerpiece building, Harmony Mill No. 3 was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971

It was the largest cotton mill complex in the world when it opened in 1872, and is one of the finest examples of a large-scale textile mill complex outside of New England.

In 2007, some of the mill buildings are being renovated and turned into high-end residential lofts by the Clover Architectural Group. Upon completion the first phase of the Lofts (96 units) was at 100% occupancy, with the second phase (134 units) adding a pool and spa and other luxury amenities which will be completed in 2010 and is called Harmony Mills Fallsview Luxury Apartments because of the views of the Cohoes Falls
