This bronze sculpture was commissioned by the Lanning Family, created by Jean Gautherin, and donated to Smith College in memory of their daughter, Mary Tomlinson Lanning, class of 1912. As a sophomore, she became ill and died in 1910. It is placed in a fountain in the middle of a circular walkway at the edge of the Botanic Gardens facing the Burton Lawn.

The statue depicts a young woman with her right hand in a small fountain from which water trickles down into a large, circular concrete basin. It was cast by the American Art Bronze Foundry of Chicago and erected on site in 1912. The front base of the statue carries the inscription: In Memory of a Beautiful Life. The right base is inscribed Brownell Hall 1908/Smith College 1912. The left side has her name and dates: Mary Tomlinson Lanning/September 18, 1888 - January 10, 1910
