The Wistariahurst was once owned by William Skinner, a prominent Holyoke silk merchant. On the Cabot Street entrance a pair of sculpted marble lions, resting on a granite bases, flank the Cabot Street stairway leading to the museum.

The Awake Lion is on the west side of the stairway. The lion is 25" by 17" by 61" and rest on a 58" high granite base. The male lion is lying down with his head turned to his right. His mouth slightly open.

The Sleeping Lion is on the east side if the stairway. The lion is 25" by 18" by 61" and rest on a 50" high granite base. The male lion is apparently sleeping with its head resting on his right front paw. His left paw is stretched out over the base.

The sculptures are reproductions of the lions located outside the tomb of Clement XIII at St. Peter's Basicila in Vatican City which were created by Antonio Canova. The reproductions, created by an unknown sculptor, was purchased by Sarah Skinner in Rome in the 1880's.
