However Matlock and Matlock Bath have had a crown in their coat of arms which is thought to show loyalty to John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster.
Many of the buildings in Matlock incorporate a crown motif and there was a Crown Hotel dating from the 1880s, which later became a building society.
This J D Wetherspoons pub is in buildings called Crown Square not far from the original Crown Hotel in the centre of Matlock. Crown Square was originally built in 1889 and then underwent renovation in 1998.
This pub was opened on 31st July 1998 and the Wetherspoons chain often uses historical references in the names of their pubs. The Crown seems to fit this pub in many ways.
