Located in the central area of the Gallivan Utah Center, these art pieces, appropriately titled, "Crystal Grate", are described by the Smithsonian Art Inventories Catalog as: "A square tree grate with hexagon-shaped opening in the center. The center design on the grate is a snow or ice crystal. The exterior design is made up of diagonal lines."

Their dimensions are listed as: "Approx. L. 59 in. x W. 59 in. x D. 1/2 in."

These tree grates are just as described in the Inventory. At the edges, they appear to be somewhat normal tree grates, except for the fact that they are bronze, turning a weathered greenish color - as opposed to the usual metal tree grates that turn a rust color as they weather. The octagonal hole was the first giveaway, as I approached them, that I was in the right location. Surrounding the octagonal opening is what appears to be a large snowflake or ice crystal, that takes up a good portion of the grate.

The "Crystal Grate" is situated in Gallivan Utah Center, in the central plaza. Galivan Utah Center occupies much of the inner block bounded by State Street, 200 South, Main Street, and 300 South.

The John W. Gallivan Utah Center is furnished with an array of unique art projects, an amphitheater, an ice rink and pond, a huge outdoor chess board, and an aviary. Its inviting atmosphere is complemented with performance areas of all sizes, lots of seating, intimate spaces and vantage points that make the Center a comfortable and fun place to enjoy the activities, casual strolling or "people watching."

The Center provides a focal point for the downtown crowd to gather for lunch or a short reprieve from the day's hectic work schedule. Special events such as exhibits, fairs, performances, parades, festivals and holiday celebrations make the John W. Gallivan Utah Center a lively and exciting gathering place year-round.

DIFFERENCES NOTED BETWEEN THE INVENTORY LISTING AND YOUR OBSERVATIONS AND RESEARCH:
I did not note any differences. The inventory states in the remarks: "From an edition of eight." I can't say that there were or weren't eight, but in the direct vicinity, I spotted four. The other four may very well be in another area of the plaza, but I didn't see them.
