The 12 mile stone out of Boston on the old "Way" road, which was always Commercial St, but changed to Franklin in Quincy and on to Hancock St towards boston. Commercial Street goes over Penn's Hill (William Penn, one of the earliest residents had a farm here, next to Adams farm.) At the top of Penn's hill is the Abigail Adams Cairn, where the 2 watched Boston harbor burn in the British invasion of the Harbor. One of the oldest roads in the US. This road goes from Boston to Plymouth. The 11 mile stone was directly opposite the John Adams birthplace which is exactly one mile away from this location. That stone has been missing for years, as well as the 13 mile stone in Braintree, which was next to the old bridge over the Monatiquot River.
It is suggested that that stone may have fallen down the embankment and indeed could be in the river.
The Stone is engraved as being placed in 1723. It is well guarded by residents and has been permanently affixed into the ground. There is also a private webcam pointing at it, no URL will be posted.
