Located in the Gallivan Utah Center, these art pieces titled, "Portal", are described by the Smithsonian Art Inventories Catalog as: "Two abstract sculptures, flanking plaza entrance. They are triangular-shaped with irregular contours. Each has two sides of multi-colored granite or marble. The third side is a conglomerate or synthetic composition colored or stained blue-green. Stone faces are highly polished."

The dimensions are listed as: (East sculpture: approx. 120 x 58 x 58 in.); (West sculpture: approx. 110 x 48 x 58 in.)

These sculptures are both made from the same materials. They appear to be two quarter sections of a rock that have been cut lengthwise and separated, with the other two sections missing. Two sides of each sculpture are smooth, made from either polished granite or marble. The other side is made to look like a rock with rough surfaces, resulting in somewhat of a three sided shape that tapers towards the top. There has been damage to them, so it is clear that they are not a solid pieces of rock, but have a center structure with a veneer of the textures presented. Unlike many of the art pieces in the plaza, I could not find a plaque or other identifying information at the site.

These two abstract sculptures are situated in Gallivan Utah Center, just east of the Utah One Center at 201 South Main Street. Galivan Utah Center occupies much of the inner block bounded by State Street, 200 South, Main Street, and 300 South.

The John W. Gallivan Utah Center is furnished with an array of unique art projects, an amphitheater, an ice rink and pond, a huge outdoor chess board, and an aviary. Its inviting atmosphere is complemented with performance areas of all sizes, lots of seating, intimate spaces and vantage points that make the Center a comfortable and fun place to enjoy the activities, casual strolling or "people watching."

The Center provides a focal point for the downtown crowd to gather for lunch or a short reprieve from the day's hectic work schedule. Special events such as exhibits, fairs, performances, parades, festivals and holiday celebrations make the John W. Gallivan Utah Center a lively and exciting gathering place year-round.

DIFFERENCES NOTED BETWEEN THE INVENTORY LISTING AND YOUR OBSERVATIONS AND RESEARCH: There is one difference in the inventory listing. Under the "Dimensions" it lists these two pieces as being "East" and "West". They are actually oriented "North" and "South" from each other. As noted, these have been damaged and are in need of repair. The south piece has had a large part of the polished section broken off.
