Savannakhet is a small city, capital of the province of the same name, in southern Laos, abutting Thailand. To the north of the city is what is referred to as the 'Old Stadium'. I could not find any reliable information about the stadium, however, the date of 1961 indicates that this stadium was built in the post-colonial era, which did experience a certain heady nationalism, that resulted in the construction of a number of landmark buildings in the country. This was most likely one more such.
The stadium would have seating for maybe 10,000 people. From some pictures in the provincial museum (in the same city), it can be seen that the stadium was also used for political rallies and events. As far as I could determine, the stadium is not formally used at present.
The date is part of the stone arch above the main entrance to the stadium. The year given, 1961, is badly worn (as is the stadium as a whole), but legible. This entrance is on the eastern side of the stadium. There is also a set of Olympic rings on the arch.
Year of construction: 1961
