Now part of the Buena Vista County historical museum, the Elk Center School shares a small greenspace with a log cabin to portray life in a bygone era. There is a plaque near the door that tells about its history:
“This Elk Township country school is typical of nearly 100 built in Buena Vista County from 1885 to the early 1900’s. These schools were part of an historical era and filled an important role in the education of rural Iowa school children. Though one room and one teacher, students from grade one to 8 attended. In recent years we have come to appreciate the learning students acquired in the shared setting. Elk Center was located 12 miles northwest of this site and moved here in July of 1996. --Buena Vista County Historical Society”
