Today it is just a water filled hole surrounded by a wooden fence that is situated below the Copper Harbor Lighthouse. But in the spring of 1844 it was the thing of dreams, as the Pittsburgh and Boston Copper Harbor Mining Company sank this shaft down sixty feet where water filling the mine and a lack of copper ore brought about its demise. In the end it proved to be more of a money pit than than a money producer. Like many first attempts this one didn't pan out, but the company continued to prospect and mine in the Keweenaw until it discovered the fabulously wealthy Cliff mine where the copper wasn't in the form of the traditional black ore, it was huge masses of pure copper.
