St. Athanasius was born in Egypt around 296 A.D. he served as Bishop of Alexandria for 40 years. he was noted as a theolgoian and a defender of the Trinity being composed of three equal components. At the time Arius had been arguing that the Son of God was an inferior component that God the Father. Known as a doctor in the church...he is venerated today not only in Roman Catholic Churches, but also by Prostestants, Coptics and Eastern Orthodox Churches. Due to the tumultous religious times and Roman Empire politics...Athansius was banished 5 times from Alexandria. He died May 2, 373 A.D.

The statue is one of several on the interior wall of St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City. The stone carved Saints are approximately 10 feet tall. Athanasius is depicted seated. He has a beard..but is almost bald otherwise. He has his left hand over his heart and his on his lap...it would appear he has a cloth or paper in his hand while perusing a scoll on his lap. He has gold halo behind his head.
