An outdoor whispering gallery. Two blue dishes (resembling satellite dishes) are set at each end of the long entrance to Seattle's Pacific Science Center's - approximately 60 feet.
When one person whispers into one of the dishes.... a person at the other dish can hear what was said as if the person was much closer.
The sign on the equipment reads:
"Secrets of Sound
Try the whisper dish!
Put your ear right up to the Whisper Dish
ring. Have a partner talk directly into the ring
at the other Whisper Dish.
Can you hear what your partner is saying?
What's happening?
Each ring is positioned at the focal point of
each Whisper Dish. When you speak into the
ring, yor voice reflects off your Whisper Dish
and travels directly to the other Whisper Dish.
There, your voice is collected and focussed into
your partner's ear.
Let's Try an Experiment
Line your mouth up with the Whisper Dish
ring. Now step back two feet and sing
directly at the ring.
Can you hear yourself?
Amazing Fact
When you back up and sing into the Whisper
Dish ring, the shape of the Whisper Dish reflects
your voice directly back at you."
Scientific Principle(s) being demonstrated: The dishes demonstrate how sound waves work.
Briefly explain if the experiment was effective for you. Could it have been better?: Worked fine! Could hear my friend's voice clearly. Didn't do the singing part.
When is the apparatus/experiment available to the public: 24/7/365...although I think after dark one would probably be deemed suspicious.
