This lonely chimney is all that remains from one of the early copper mines of the Keweenaw Peninsula.

The investors in the Clark Mine felt the small outcropping fissure of copper at this location was reason enough to build a mine. Unfortunately they were wrong. Incorporated on Dec. 19, 1853, it was worked periodically until it closed for good in 1901.
During that time it never earned enough to pay back the investors, let alone turn the handsome profit they expected. And today all that is left is this interesting native stone chimney. Set on a slight rise near the old waste dumps, there is a sign and parking within a few feet letting you know you have found this interesting bit of local history.
