The theater is located on Fisherman's Wharf. The original theater was the idea of Bruce Ariss. Ariss was introduced to Angelo Di Girolamo , whose brother had come up with the idea of a theater at the wharf. With financial backing, the theater opened in 1950. On December 31, 1959 the theater was destroyed in a fire.
The theater was rebuilt about three blocks from the wharf. The facility would eventually be named "The Old Monterey Opera House"
The current location on fisherman's wharf was opened on December 3, 1976 with a production of "Guys and Dolls."
