The memorial is made from rough hewn stone with the face smoothed for the inscription. The memorial stands about 2 metres (7 feet) high in a grassed leisure area.
The inscription reads:
"TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND THE GRATEFUL / MEMORY OF THE EMPLOYEES OF THE SOUTH / METROPOLITAN GAS COMPANY ATTACHED TO / THE EAST GREENWICH GAS COMPANY, PHOENIX WHARF AN D/ ORDNANCE WHARF WORKS, WHO IN RESPONSE / TO THE CALL OF THEIR KING AND COUNTRY / SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES DURING THE GREAT WAR".
Beneath the inscription are the name, rank and service of 79 men.
The memorial was initially located at the gas works on the Greenwich peninsula and was lost until 1999 when it was found and re-sited as the peninsula was developed.
The memorial is now maintained by English Partnerships one of the leading companies undertaking the regeneration of the area.
