According to tradition, after the Crucifixion, St. John travelled with Mary, the mother of Jesus, to this stone house in Selçuk, in present day Turkey, in which she lived until her (Catholic Doctrine) Assumption or (Orthodox belief) Dormition. Selçuk less than 5 miles north of the ancient port city of Ephesus.

The house was discovered in the 19th century based on the published visions of a German Augustinian nun, Anne Catherine Emmerich, which were published as a book. On October 18, 1881, a French priest, the Abbé Julien Gouyet, discovered a small stone building on a mountain overlooking ruins of Ephesus. He believed this was the house described by Emmerich.

Ten years later, two Lazarist missionaries, Father Poulin and Father Jung, rediscovered the building, actually a roof-less ruin. The ruin had been venerated as Panaya Kapulu ("Doorway to the Virgin") by members of a distant mountain village who were descended from the Christians of Ephesus.

Popes Paul VI, John Paul II, and Benedict XVI have all visited the site. Pope Paul VI 'unofficially' confirmed its authenticity and Pope John Paul II declared the site a place of pilgrimage for Christians.

The stamp was issued by Turkey in 1953 as part of a set of six stamps depicting churches and shrines in Turkey.
