A pair of bronze deer statues flank the inlet to Mandraki Harbor in Rhodes where, according to tradition, the Colossus of Rhodes stood.
Colossus of Rhodes was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It was a lighthouse in the form of a giant human figure that straddled the entrance to Mandraki Harbor. Ships entering Rhodes sailed between the legs of the giant. In 226 BC a strong earthquake toppled the Colossus. In its place today are a pair of statues of the symbol of Rhodes - a deer. Each deer is placed on a tall column built where the legs of the Colossus once stood. Today ships entering the harbor must pass between these statues.
The stamp was issued by Italy - Italian Offices Abroad - Aegean Islands in 1940 for use in the once Italian controlled island of Rhodes. It depicts the famous deer statue in the foreground and the equally famous she-wolf statue of Rome in the distance (replacing the second deer), presumably to make a political statement. The stamp commemorates the Triennial Overseas Exposition in Naples.
