The following can be read in a plaque near the cave:
«Legend says that in the nights of Full moon the werewolf goes through the granitic streets of the village of Cambra, hunting anyone caught off guard. The shutters of the windows are closed and the children hide under the blankets when they hear the clatter of their feet of sidewalks. But what is this monster that so terrifies the full moon nights?
It turns out that families in the region, the most numerous, it was customary to have 7, 8, 9 and more children ... If, on reaching the seventh child, it was born a girl they had to call her Benta or Custódia and if it was a boy they had put him the name of Bento or Custódio.
But not everyone remembered or believed in the curse and so there gave him another name. So, in every night of full moon, this child, upon reaching the age of teenager suffered a terrible change, growing her teeth and ears, nails turned into claws and the body was covered with black hair... fiery eyes searched the dark, jumped out of the house, looking for helpless victims, hunted them and then dragging them to their hideout, a cave, on the side of River Couto, near the old tower, where they were eagerly devoured! Testament to this are the bones that were lying around there, and the dark walls of the cave where, on the coldest nights, the monster a light a fire to keep him warm.»
